Just do things.

Sometimes, you just have to do things. I mean this in the broadest sense possible—just do things. It’s similar to that catchphrase Nike has. Just do it, just do things, you get the idea. Now, all of this came about when I was on break at work. My sister and I—if you didn’t know—work at the same place, so we take our breaks together. Weather-permitting, we take a walk down the dirt road across from our building down to the water tower that stands at the end.

This road is bordered by open fields, but there’s a small hill near the end of the road in the field. My sister Bailee and I walked up and over the hill, and then began to make our way down when she said, “I wanna roll down it.”

To which I responded with, “You know what? Why not?” I started at the top of the hill, laid down, and just rolled on down! There wasn’t anything stopping me from doing this, so, well, I just did it! This might seem like a small, weird thing, but when was the last time you ever rolled down a hill? I definitely recommend it! 10/10! Five stars!

Again, it’s not like there’s anything stopping you, or me, so why don’t we see more adults out there having fun just for the sake of having fun? I think there comes a point, at least in our modern society, that it starts to feel almost socially unacceptable to enjoy the random weird things we enjoyed as kids, which, in my opinion, is rather stupid.

Why should we cease doing the things that light us up just because of the ridiculous—and honestly, made-up—rules of society? I see no reason to abide by these rules just to erase my own joy. Rolling down a hill is probably an odd example of this, I know, but I couldn’t help thinking about it after I got up laughing. I mean, what if someone saw me?

That’s what I mean about ridiculous rules of society! It’s perfectly acceptable for a small child to roll down a hill, but a 27-year-old adult?

“Kids will be kids.”

“Kids just want to have fun.”

Well, so do I! I still love doing all of the things I did as a kid! Climbing trees, crawling over large boulders, writing, coloring—just having fun! Video games and board games too! Just because we’re adults, that doesn’t mean we need to give up “childish” joys. Life is full of joy and adventure and excitement, but only if we stop to experience it for ourselves. Never pass up the opportunity to do something purely for the fun and whimsy of it all.

Now, to my fellow chroniclers, what’s a childish joy you still hold on to?
