So, I used to be so stubborn about trying new things. As a kid, I knew what I liked and that was that. If I thought I didn’t like something, I just didn’t try it. I mean, why would I? I already knew! Or, rather, I thought I knew.

Here’s the thing, though. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found it’s actually gotten easier and easier to try new things. I don’t really know if it’s anything specific that changed how I feel, other than just general life experience, you know? You live a little more, you try a little more, and suddenly the things you were so sure about start to loosen up a bit.

Musicals are a perfect example of this, I think, at least for me. I never really got into them, because I didn’t think that I liked them. Not because I’d watched a bunch and hated them, but I just had it in my head that musicals weren’t my thing.

Then Dylan showed me Repo: The Genetic Opera, and it changed how I view them. I still wasn’t entirely fond of them after that, if I’m being honest. It wasn’t like one movie flipped a switch and suddenly I loved every musical ever.

But I’ve seen several more since then, and each one I’ve seen I’ve loved. Rent was another one I’ve seen, and of course Rocky Horror. Each one made it a little easier to try the next one.

Some people get so stuck in their ways that it’s almost like they’re afraid to venture outside of their comfort zone and try something new. I don’t want to be that person. I prefer to grow and change and live life instead of watching life pass me by.

I think I’m writing all this to say that it’s just about being willing to try. Why wait? What’s stopping us, really? When was the last time you tried something just for fun, just because?

I think that’s kind of how trying new things works for me now. You try the thing, and then you try the next thing, and you see where it takes you.

What’s something you thought you didn’t like, until you actually tried it?
